Chiropractic is not just for pain

Chiropractic was originally, when developed, was not toward pain management. It was and still is based on the philosophy, which through research, that interference from the brain to the body via the nerves will produce dysfunction in the effected areas. In other words, the signal your brain is sending to your body can either be sent with static or not sent at all. A good analogy is a bad cell phone connection. You can't exactly hear everything the person on the other line is saying, but you get some idea or have to keep asking what they said.

Your body gives you signals that something isn't working properly and pain is one of them. Other signals can be numbness, dysfunction, twitching, spasms etc. Pain can come immediately after an injury, or it can take a while to show up. So how does this relate to Chiropractic Care and why its not just for pain? Another analogy is we have cars, they don't necessarily have to break down for us to maintain them. We get the oil changed regularly on our cars, we get tune-ups and even occasionally clean out our cars! We need to be doing this for our bodies as well. This also pertains to our animals as well. Why wait until we, our animals or even our children are in pain before they get a chiropractic check up? I used to get from patients, "I don't know what I did to get this way" Not taking of a car will cause it to break down, that can happen to people and animals too.

My whole point is, pain doesn't have to be present for a problem in the body to be present. Regular chiropractic check-ups for you and your pets for overall health is recommended to keep your body functioning the best it can.

What is Animal Chiropractic?

Animal Chiropractic, just like human chiropractic, is a drug-free addition to your animal's health care. Chiropractic can most importantly improve performance, decrease pain and improve your animal's well being. Chiropractic accomplishes this by restoring normal range of motion in the joints.

Chiropractic care focuses on the mechanical causes of problems, nerves get irritated or pinched by a joint not moving properly. Either a tight muscle or a joint can get "stuck" and not moving its full range of motion. This is called a Subluxation or Misalignment. Chiropractic adjustments treat these subluxations by gently restoring proper range of motion in the joint, which frees up the nerve and muscle tissue, allowing them to work better.

Chiropractic care is helpful in animals when an injury has occurred, due to the involvement of the joints, muscles and nerves. Some common injuries include: slips, falls, other traumas, even arthritis, pinched nerves, disc diseases and other degenerative diseases.

How did my animal get a subluxation?

Regular every day life can cause slips, spills, tripping, falls and anything else from small to large traumas or accidents. Degenerative issues in the joints can be a result of long-term subluxations as well. Inactivity, believe it or not can even cause subluxations. Since animals can't talk, they have to communicate in different ways, sometimes it can be positive or negative.

Who should check my pet for a subluxation?

A certified Chiropractor or Veterinarian who is specially trained in Animal Chiropractic. There are a few schools that specifically teach veterinarians and chiropractors about the anatomy and proper adjusting techniques regarding animal chiropractic. The International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA) and the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) are the only orgianizations that test the knowledge and clinical skills of these students. This is very important, with chiropractic, you are dealing with the joints, muscles and delicate nerves in your pet's body, and with an untrained person, damage or worsening of the condition can occur. There are some veterinarians and chiropractors that claim to have taken classes in a weekend seminar and know the techniques, but would you rather have someone who spent months to a year training or someone who spent a weekend training? It is your pet, so you get to choose.

Usually two to three adjustments are performed. Once your animal has improved, a future schedule can be determined based on type and severity of injury, your animal's condition, show and activity schedule. Dr. Reynolds believes chiropractic as an essential part of any athlete's training program, human or animal. All human athletes receive various types of therapy during training and competition. Likewise, our animal can be a pricey emotional and financial investment, but its easier to prevent small problems from becoming larger and more costly ones in the future. With proper joint motion there is a better chance of avoiding the larger problem.

Animal Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the nervous system, spine and muscles.... Think of it this way: Your brain is the most important organ in your body. It directs all the activities of the body through the nerves. The main connector for the brain to the body is the spinal cord which breaks off into nerves and exit to the body through the spinal column. There is a relationship between these delicate nerves, spinal cord, bones and muscles. The vertebral column has a series of joints between each bone which, with activity, trauma and even inactivity can cause subluxations or "sticking" between the joints affecting the nerves, muscles and the other surrounding joints. Think of this joint sticking as a rusty hinge on a door, it takes a little bit of pressure and oil to get it moving properly again. Pressure is placed on the nerves and they will continue to send information but at a less desirable rate, which can cause muscle spasms, atrophy of the muscles or pain. The subluxations or "sticking" in the bones can cause problems with movement not to mention pain. The main idea about all of this is your nervous system, when under any kind of interference, is not working to its fullest potential. We want our cars working their best, we want our kids functioning the best they can, why not our bodies?

As with any health care method, please know all the safety and warnings. Read all labels and prescription adverse reactions. The statistics will amaze you if you want to base any health care method on the statistics.

I can tell you, Chiropractic works, its effective, safe and will help in most situations. What I mean by that is, it will work for you if you follow recommendations of the doctor, find a reputable doctor and take care of your body. Take responsibility of your health. You are in control of it and the only person who can take care of it.

This is just an introduction to Chiropractic on humans and animals. Join me in this journey.
